Formula and assumptions

Weight per meter is calculated as kg/m = 0.02466 × (D − t) × t, where D is the outside diameter and t the wall thickness in millimeters. The factor derives from a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³ — the standard approach in EN 10220 and API 5L practice.

A 3% allowance is added to the coil requirement for typical scrap in spiral pipe production. Results are theoretical; actual weight may vary ±3.5–5% due to plate tolerance and coating.

How is steel pipe weight calculated?

Weight per meter follows the formula kg/m = 0.02466 × (D − t) × t, where D is the outside diameter (mm) and t is the wall thickness (mm). The factor comes from a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³ and is the standard approach used in EN 10220 and API 5L practice.

Does the calculated weight match the actual pipe weight exactly?

It is the theoretical weight. Actual weight typically varies within ±3.5–5% due to plate thickness tolerance, the weld seam and coating. Commercial calculations are based on theoretical weight.

How is the coil requirement estimated?

About 3% is added to the total pipe weight to cover typical scrap in spiral pipe production (end cropping, weld bevels, test samples). The exact coil tonnage is finalized in production planning based on coil width, forming angle and pipe length.

How does coating change the weight?

3LPE coating typically adds 2.5–4 kg per square meter of pipe surface; cement mortar lining adds considerably more depending on thickness. Use the external surface area result to estimate coating quantities.
